Canvas Basic Training

Basic Training is a 2 hour workshop that will introduce you to Canvas.  Users will be taken through the process of setting up core components on their class in Canvas.

The following topics will be covered:

  • Canvas general navigation and use
  • Communicating through Canvas
  • Setting up your course in Canvas
  • Editing pages
  • Using the Modules tool
  • Creating Assignments
  • Grading with Speed Grader and using the Grade Book
  • Course Settings
  • Creating Quizzes (if time allows)

Workshop Descriptions


Assignments

Length: 1 hour

This session will take you through how to create assignments.  Users will be shown how to create assignment groups, create assignments within those groups, modify advanced options within an assignment and how to make use of the speedgrader to efficiently grade and provide feedback for assignments.  The gradebook will also be looked at, as it is closely related to Assignments.

Recommended for instructors who are already familiar with the basics of Canvas.

Course Settings and Learning Tools Integration (LTI)

Length: 1 hour

This session will take users through the course settings interface and cover the more critical components for managing your course.  We will talk about the importance of start and end dates, cross-listing courses and copying previous course structures.  We will then take a look at using the Canvas App Center that allows you to setup LTI applications that will increase the functionality of Canvas for your course.  We will discuss what to look for when selecting an app and how best to evaluate them.  

Recommended for instructors who are already familiar with the basics of Canvas.

Discussions

Length: 1 hour

This session will take users through running successful discussion threads on Canvas.  Users will be shown how to setup discussions, create assignments from discussions and how to manage them during the course.  Best practices will also be addressed.

Files and Modules

Length: 1 hour

This session will take you through the Files and Modules tools.  Users will be shown how to easily upload files to Canvas and how to organize and secure them.  We will then take you through creating and using modules in your course.  They can be setup in different ways, such as by topic or chronologically.  We will talk about the benefits of running a course using modules.

Recommended for instructors who are already familiar with the basics of Canvas.
